The Best Celebrity #ALSIceBucketChallenges

The #ALSIceBucketChallenge has been doing the internet rounds for weeks now and it is not showing any signs of slowing down. The challenge aims to raise vital funds and awareness for ALS or Motor Neuron Disease. There have been various charity social media trends this year for good causes, like the #NoMakeupSelfie for Breast Cancer Awareness at the start of the year. However, the Ice Bucket Challenge is by far my favourite! Aren’t fundraisers better when there are soaking wet celebrities involved?!

Justin Timberlake

I love the energy and collective effort JT and his team went to in this video. They make the challenge look fun and exciting.

David Beckham

Well if a shirtless David Beckham doesn;t put a smile on your face, I don’t know what will!

Lady GaGa

Cool, calm and collected!

Niall Horan

Great reaction by everyone’s favourite One Directioner!

Victoria Beckham

The sheer delight and laughter in the background of this video is enough to put a smile on anyone’s face. Victoria getting drenched is an added laugh.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Only Leo could do an IceBucketChallenege whilst raising awareness for two important charities. A true philanthropist.

Michelle Dockery

I love Michelle’s video! Surrounded by half naked men in golden shorts and  she gives us possibly one of the best reactions to the ice cold water.

Don’t forget to donate if you do the challenge! Let me know your favourite video, celebrity or otherwise!

Happy 10th Birthday Mean Girls!

If the phrases, “You go Glen Coco”, “It’s October 3rd” and ” Is butter a carb?”, mean nothing to you then where have you been for the last 10 years?! Today, April 30th, Mean Girls celebrates its 10th birthday. After constantly quoting it through my teenage years and at least once a day at secondary school, this is undoubtedly my favourite film of all time. Below are some of my personal favourite (and best) quotes from the film.

It’s safe to say that everyone’s favourite dumb blonde, Karen, has left us with some memorable quotes. Her best include…

God Karen, you can’t just ask people why they’re white!

Remember this girl obsessed with Regina/Cady…

And then this girl that had some serious issues but possible the best lines from the film…

Lines which in turn produced the second most quoted line from the film…

Yo, yo, yo, allll youuuu….Safe to say, they don’t make matheletes like Kevin G anymore!

Of course, they don’t make mother’s like Mrs George either.

Don’t deny it, you love, love, to hate Regina George.

The most famous name from the film and we don’t even know what he looks like. Poor Glen Coco

Thanks to Gretchen Weiners for teaching us all the rules of feminism

I always felt sorry for this fella…

Don’t forget, It’s a Wednesday so….

Happy Mother’s Day! 5 of TV and Film’s Best Mothers

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone in Ireland and the UK! Whether you’re spending the day with your Mammy, Granny, Sister or not celebrating one of Hallmark’s many holidays, today is a day for celebrating Mothers in general. For the day that’s in it, here are some of the best Mammys on TV and from Film.

Mrs Weasley, Harry Potter

Julie Walters as Mrs Weasley, Harry Potter

Julie Walters as Mrs Weasley, Harry Potter

Would Harry have found platform 9 and 3/4 without Mrs Weasley? In my eyes, Mrs Weasley is the perfect mammy. Tough but fair, Mrs Weasley is strict enough to make sure the Weasley children don’t overstep the line but she is loving, fierce and will go above and beyond for her kids. Awwhh!

Marge Simpson, The Simpsons

This blue haired lady has a lot to deal with in the form of Bart and Homer Simpson. Her squeeky high voice and constant worrying and love make her a great TV Mammy.

Mrs George, Mean Girls

Amy Poehler as Mrs George, Mean Girls.

“I’m not like a regular Mom, I’m a cool Mom”. Need I add any more?

Rayna James, Nashville

Connie Britton as Rayna James, Nashville.

Connie Britton as Rayna James, Nashville.

Nashville Momma Rayna James manages to balance her time as a country music superstar and being mother to two girls. An empowering female figure and role model, Rayna is also a great mother as (you guessed it) her children always come first.

Countess Grantham, Downton Abbey

Maggie Smith as the Countess of Grantham

Everyone’s favourite blueblooded Mother/Granny, Violet Crawley embodies many forgotten traditional beliefs and parenting practices. While some of these are best forgotten, at heart Violet is still a great mother.

They’re Worth It! Zoe Saldana Joins the Many Faces of L’Oreal Paris

Zoe Saldana is the latest in a long line of celebrity beauties to join forces with L’Oreal Paris.

Zoe Saldana has been named as L'Oreal Paris' Latest Spokesmodel

Zoe Saldana has been named as L’Oreal Paris’ Latest Spokesperson

The Avatar and Star Trek actress is set to join a long list of gorgeous ladies to represent the cosmetics brand. Saldana spoke to E!News gushing,  “As a L’Oréal Paris spokesperson, being able to say, ‘We’re worth it,’ means so much to me… I am thrilled to join this beauty journey with such an inspirational brand.” I Can’t wait to see the campaign. Until then, here is a look at some of the brands previous spokespeople and their campaigns.

Blake Lively

Blake Lively L'Oreal Paris

Blake Lively L’Oreal Paris

Blake Lively can do no wrong in my books.  I feel like Blake is a brilliant (also new) addition to the L’Oreal team! Not only is she absolutely gorgeous but she is a great role model, actress and down-to-earth girl.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria L'Oreal Paris

Eva Longoria L’Oreal Paris

Actress Eva Longoria has been a brand ambassador for L’Oreal for quite some time. Mascara, foundation, lipstick, shampoo, you name it, Eva’s made it look incredibly desirable.

Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore L'Oreal Paris

Julianne Moore L’Oreal Paris

Julianne Moore is bringing some pale perfection to L’Oreal. Moore looks fresh as a daisy in her latest campaign…I’d imagine I’m not the only one wishing I’ll look half as good when I hit 53!

Julianna Marguiles

Julianna Margulies L'Oreal Paris

Julianna Margulies L’Oreal Paris

Julianna Margulies  is also one of L’Oreal’s ‘older’ ambassadors, although I say that with caution as 47 is by no means old. The actress can be seen looking fab onscreen and offscreen for the brand.

Beyonce L'Oreal Paris

Beyonce L’Oreal Paris

When does Beyonce not look amazing? The superstar’s campaign caused some controversy a few years ago after the brand were accused of whitening B’s skin. While Beyonce has not been seen onscreen or in print for the brand recently her campaign was one of my favourites.

Cheryl Cole

Cheryl Cole L'Oreal

Cheryl Cole L’Oreal

After an absence from the X Factor judging panel, Cheryl could be seen hair whippin-and-a-flippin’ for L’Oreal. Now that she is back on the X Factor , I don’t doubt that Cheryl will be debuting a new ad to run during the X Factor ad breaks when the show returns… if only to rub it in Simon’s face!

5 Ways to Fight The January Blues

January Blues

For many of us January is the most depressing month of the year. The added woe of being broke after an indulgent Christmas means many of us have next to no money this month. The school holidays are over, work has resumed or you’re stressed to your eyeballs cramming for exams/stressing about your results.  However, we are more than halfway through the month and February is just around the corner. If you’re still struggling with the January Blues here are some suggestions to brighten up the last few days of the month and set you on a happier path into Spring.

Our Favourite TV Shows Return

The bad weather and short evenings are a great excuse to cosy up in front of the TV. After winter breaks, all our favourite TV Shows are back for new seasons. A few of my favourites include,The Good Wife Season 5  coming Thursday 30th January to More 4, Revenge Season 3 on Tuesdays RTE 2 or Mondays E4, Suits Season 3  also coming Thursday 30th January to  Dave, The Tomorrow People debuted this years and so far, so good. You can see it Wednesdays on E4 and Grey’s Anatomy has returned, catch it Wednesdays on Sky Living or Tuesday RTE2.

 Invest in New Products

The start of a new year and the winter weather is a great excuse to revamp your beauty and skin care collection.  New skincare and makeup products are not only a great investment but they’re a great source of happiness for most of us. Who doesn’t love opening a new lip balm or pot of moisturiser?  This time of year demands a heavy moisturiser or masque, both for your face and hair. The winter winds and bitter cold can cause serious damage if you don’t look after your skin and hair. Boots, Superdrug or your local chemist will undoubtedly have great January sale offers on most products to cure dull winter skin or hair. Makeup wise, there are loads of new products launching in the next few months, keep up-to-date with all the latest launches with Bloglovin’s top beauty posts.

Awards Season Fashion

If you’re a regular reader, you’ll be aware of all the red carpet events that have been happening in the US. Red carpet fashion has been clogging up everyone’s twitter feeds, favourite blogs and entertainment shows. The SAG Awards and The Golden Globes have already provided us with some amazing fashion and The Grammys, BAFTA’s and Oscar’s are still to come.  Red carpet glamour is a great way to satisfy your desire for luxury goods this month without spending any money.

New Films

As mentioned, with all the award ceremonies taking place, the best way to pass an evening is at the cinema in front of the latest blockbuster/award winning motion picture. This year’s big successes include 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity and so on. The list is endless. January is definitely the best time of year to hit the cinema.

Summer is Almost Here

If none of the above quite fit your fancy, you can sleep happy with the fact that summer is getting closer every day!

Let me know your favourite way to beat the January Blues.

My 2013 Favourties

2013 Favourites

Simple Oil Balancing Moisturiser

I came across this Simple moisturiser by chance in ASDA for a mere £3. Usually on sale for under £5, or on offer at 2 for £6, this is a great low cost moisturiser. It is light on the skin and, as with all Simple products, it is chemical and fragrance free. I like to use it right before I apply my makeup but I wouldn’t fully recommend it as a primer as it doesn’t matify the skin completely. However, it does control excess oils well and the packaging is sanitary and appealing.

Revlon Bold Sangria

This was an end of year buy influenced by an Instagram pic.  Revlon Colourstay’s ‘Bold Sangria’ polish is one of my new favourite polishes. Last year my Revlon nail polish ‘go-to- was ‘Spanish Moss’ which I used up and think I’ll repurchase again this year. Overall the Revlon polishes are long lasting, chip resistant and shiny. It is a bit costly at £7.99 but I think it’s worth the money, like all expensive polishes. Yes, I’m talking to you Essie and OPI!

Maybelline Baby Lips

I’m so happy this product lived up to the hype. As a slave to Vaseline for dry, chapped lips, I have tried numerous lip products. Finally, after a lot of trial and error I’ve found a good runner up. I’m not sure I would go as far as to replace this for Vaseline but it’s a tight call. Baby Lips itself is oily and moisturising, leaving a lovely sheen to your lips without being sticky. With a simple twist applicator at the bottom the packaging is bright and bold. I have been using the ‘Quenched’ Baby Lips which is goes onto the lips clear but there are numerous Baby Lips available in different shades which I can’t wait to try in 2014. In terms of availability I found these were hard to come by. That said they have been out for a good few months now so keep an eye out. They’re very popular!  In other Maybelline ‘Baby’ news, this month sees the launch of ‘Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser’ primer. The online waiting list for this product at is full but I managed to get one in my local Boots this evening!! Judging by the early online reviews I’ve read it’s as good as the ‘Baby Lips’ and a steal for £7.99 or (€11.99).Off the huge success of Baby Lips, Maybelline are launching a ‘Dr Rescue’ Baby Lips. Already available in the US, I’m looking forward to trying this re-vamped version of a brilliant product.

 Yankee Candle Fluffy Towels

Who doesn’t love a good Yankee Candle? My favourite towards the end of 2013 was definitely Fluffy Towels and Soft Blanket. Both extremely similar scents are fresh and cleansing. I found that they are completely odour eliminating compared to the other Yankee scents I’ve burned over the years.

Vogue USA The September Issue

Jennifer Lawrence knows how to work a cover shoot! J-Law looked incredible in Vogue USA September issue in 2013. The biggest and most important issue of the year was full of amazing spreads, including Jennifer’s and one shot in Co. Cork, Ireland. Jessica Chastain gave Jennifer a good run for her money as my favourite Vogue cover girl for 2013, a copy of which I manged to get my hands on yesterday! Beyoncé’s May Vogue UK  and Claire Danes November Vogue UK covers were my UK Vogue faves.

The Great Gatsby DVD

Anyone who follows my blog will know that I L-O-V-E The Great Gatsby, both book and Baz Luhrmann’s silver screen adaptation.  The music, fashion and jewellery are simply stunning in this film and Carey Mulligan is like an angel send from heaven with porcelain skin. A must see!!

Bruno Mars Unorthodox Jukebox

A Christmas present in 2012 I have been listening to Bruno Mars on a loop for the whole of 2013. My favourite songs include the released ‘Locked Out of Heaven’, ‘Treasure’ and the unreleased ‘Natalie’ and ‘Money Make Her Smile’.  The only disappointing thing about this album is that there are only ten songs on it.

Cath Kidston Makeup Bag

A present for my 20th birthday, a small Cath Kidston makeup bag was the very thing I didn’t know I needed! This is the perfect handbag sized makeup bag. Brilliant for holding a bottle of nail polish, eyeliner, mascara, a nail file, a mirror and lip balm in one place in your handbag. It’s also stylish enough to bring out in public.

Six Great Christmas Ads

Merry Christmas VanessaTaaffe.wordpress

Love them or hate them, Christmas ads are an integral part of the festive season. For many Christmas officially starts once the ads hit our screens but this year, September to be exact, the ads came in thick, fast and uncommonly early. I’m sure I think that every year! As always, there have been some amazing new gems for 2013, mainly John Lewis and their annual Christmas short film. However, the classics will always have a place in our hearts.

John Lewis

It’s fast becoming a tradition for John Lewis to dominate with their annual Christmas ad.The remarkably Christmasy songs always do well in the charts and give lease of life to classic tunes, the instant success of Gabrielle Aplin and her version of The Power of Love springs to mind. Lily Allen’s adaptation of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know has added a magical touch to this years campaign.  The Hare and Bear are  likely to go down as one of the cutest Christmas couples.

 Kellogs Corn Flakes

The Kellogs Corn Flakes ad is an all round Christmas favourite. Childhood memories of waiting up to hear Santa on the roof, leaving out milk, cookies, carrots, or in this instance Corn Flakes, come flooding back to us all when we see this ad. The excitement of Christmas eve is perfectly portrayed and it doesn’t hurt that the children are extremely cute. A real classic!

Drawing inspiration from The Wizard of Oz, Aladdin and Alice in Wonderland, this years M&S ad stars model, actress and lingerie designer, Rosie Huntington Whitley, model David Gandy and actress extraordinaire, Helena Bonham Carter. The music is suitably magical, festive and recognisable. I can’t think of too many women that wouldn’t mind being whisked away on a magic carpet by David Gandy!  M&S are definitely bringing their brand and products to a whole new audience with this superb Christmas ad. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next year.

Simply a wonderfully, magical Christmas ad. The music, the snow, the sentiment, everyone wrapped up safe and warm in their houses on Christmas eve. How idyllic!

Cadbury’s Chocolate

This new Cadbury’s ad is every child’s dream, isn’t it?! Unwrapping mania at it’s best, with an upbeat, happy clappy tune to match.

I’d love to know your favourite ads this Christmas!

Expectation v Reality: Unrealistic Expectations Thanks to TV

If you haven’t watched The Hills, MTV Cribs, Keeping Up with the Kardashians or even Geordie Shore and The Only Way is Essex, without pining after designer shoes, ginormous luxury houses or an all expenses paid night out, I commend you!  Shopping all day with limitless funds or a luxury mansion that sleeps twenty four people and securely houses their cars is a completely unrealistic expectation of what adulthood holds in store.
Here are some of the (unrealistic) expectations that television have given us over the years…

Medical Staff

Medical Expectation Mc Steamy Mc Dreamy and Kate Beckinsale Nurse
Expectation: McSteamy, McDreamy, Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbour)
Reality: 99% of the time our local doctors and nurses are regular guys and girls like ourselves. Medical personnel are undoubtedly  sexualised on television. The reality can more often than not be older, greyer and fully clothed professionals.

Victoria Secrets Models and Bradley Cooper

Expectation: Victoria Secrets Models, Bradley Cooper
Reality: Trying to achieve and maintain a body as fierce as those mentioned above is extremely unrealistic. Sadly for us, the media dictates that looking like a Victoria Secrets Angel is completely normal and achievable.

Expectation: MTV Cribs style 10,000 square foot home with 20 bed and bathrooms, luxury penthouse in central New York/ LA.
Reality: No one lives like this unless you are OBSCEENLY wealthy! The cast and crew of The Hills have admitted that MTV purchased their luxury apartments and condos for the purpose of filming the show. Comfy cushions, some scented candles and pictures can make any dingy house feel like your dream home, you just may have to use your bath as your indoor swimming pool.

DreamJob Expectation
Expectation: Running into Anna Wintour (Editor in Chief of Vogue) at the Supermarket, becoming the next football or singing sensation.
Reality: If you have ever met Anna Wintour in the supermarket and bagged a job at Vogue I am extremely jealous! Chances are you will have to work your way through the ranks to achieve the success that Anna Wintour has.  No one gets handed their dream job in fashion, production, communications, without having to work hard for it. No footballer is put on the pitch without hard training sessions and 100% dedication to top fitness. Singing shows like the Xfactor have given younger viewers the impression that this is a quick route to fame, whether you can sing or not. Don’t give up on your dream job just remember we’re not all Whitney Port and Lauren Conrad!

Food Expectation

Expectation: Masterchef or Michelin Star style presentation
Reality: While I try my best to replicate the basic dishes on Masterchef like chocolate gnash cake or roast chicken, my recreations never live up to the professional creations. That said this is something to aspire to… I’ll have to keep trying!
What unrealistic expectations has television and the wider media given you?

The Price of The Great Gatsby

In honour of The Great Gatsby DVD release this Monday,  I thought I would re-post this info I found online about the cost of living like Jay, Daisy and Nick in 2013 versus the 1920’s.
If I had a spare £69, 614,138.13, I’d live like West Egg royalty too!

Reasons Lady Grantham is Great

Lady Grantham Maggie Smith Downton Abbey

If I had to choose a TV granny, Lady Grantham would definitely be at the top of my list!

Downton Abbey’s resident grandmother, played by Maggie Smith, is the perfect light relief from some of the show’s old fashioned issues.  Despite these out dated issues, modern audiences can’t get enough of the trials and tribulations Downton Abbey faces. This is mainly down to the character and hilarity of Lady Grantham. Her brilliant one liners and mannerisms are an integral part of what makes Downton Abbey so successful.

She’s a Traditionalist

A woman of Lady Grantham’s social standing can be forgiven for her traditionalist views. As the seasons have progressed, she has developed a more accepting attitude to the changing times she finds herself in.

“I do think a woman’s place is eventually in the home, but I see no harm in her having some fun before she gets there.”

Matthew: “Edith has had an invitation to write a newspaper column.”

Lady G : “When may she expect an offer to appear on the London stage?”

She’s a Realist

Harsh and heartless as she may appear to viewers towards her granddaughters and son, Lady G is a great dose of welcome reality.

Carson: “Hard work and diligence weigh more than beauty in the real world.”

Lady G: “If only that were true.”

Lady Grantham

An Aristocrat

While she may be open to accepting new inventions, social etiquettes and freedoms, Lady Grantham is still a woman of class and dignity.

“Don’t be defeatist, dear, it’s very middle class.”

“Edith, you are a Lady, not Toad of Toad Hall.”

Witty and Subtly Sarcastic Sense of Humour

“We can’t have him assassinated. I suppose”

“I do hope I’m interrupting something.”

“That is the thing about nature: there is so much of it.”

Lady G: “You are quite wonderful the way you see room for improvement wherever you look. I never knew such reforming zeal.”

Mrs. Crawley: “I take that as a compliment.”

Lady G: “I must’ve said it wrong.”

Lady Grantham

Robert: “I’ll do it on one condition – no, two. First, Matthew must agree . . . Second, you will both admit it when you realize you were wrong.”

Lady G: “Oh, well, that is an easy caveat to accept, because I’m never wrong.”

An Old Soul in a Modern Age

I think this conversation with Matthew says it all.

Lady G: “What am I sitting on?”

Matthew: “A swivel chair”

Lady G: “Another modern brainwave?”

Matthew: “Not very modern, they were invented by Thomas Jefferson.”

Lady G: “Why does every day involve a fight with an American?”

See Downton Abbey at 9pm Sunday’s on ITV or 9pm Wednesday’s on TV3.

Six Friends We All Have

1 The Perfectionist

There’s always one super organised friend who is able to co-ordinate their work and personal life perfectly. They remember everyone’s birthday and still manage to be perfectly groomed with a tidy and clutter free house.  This friend may drive you mad with their constant need for perfection but there are numerous benefits to having a friend like this. You can guarantee this friend will organise excellent social outings and they’ll make sure everyone has a great time without trying too hard to make it fun. If you’re struggling to keep on top of work, school or life in general, thie perfectionist can help organise and co-ordinate all the issues you’re struggling with.

2 The One Who Has It All

This friend has it all! Amazing skin and hair, perfect white teeth, a personality to beat the band, they’re extremely intelligent and everyone loves to be around them. People flock around this person and love to see them coming and value their opinion. They’ll have a large social group of friends in return expanding your social circle. With endless talents and humility to top it all off, it’s hard not to love the one who has it all.

3 The Joker

Someone that can make you laugh after a bad day is a friend indeed. Whether you’re feeling down or in the middle of a serious conversation, someone with a carefree attitude and great sense of humour is just what you need. Granted when you’re the butt of their harmless joke it can be annoying but you’re more than likely not the only one they do it to. They may not take things as seriously as you’d like them to but having someone who can break the awkward silences, bring you back to earth and make you laugh at the same time is a friend everyone should have.  If you’re the Joker in your group, keep up the good work!

4 The One with the Right Answers

This amigo may be useless when it comes to trivial fashion or sport questions like, “Do these shoes match this outfit?” or “What is the offside rule anyway?”, but they  always have the right answers for life’s trickier questions.  They’re philosophical, able to calm you down in a crisis and if that crisis worsens they’ll be there for you with sound advice. The chances are they know you better than anyone else does. Their caring nature and trustworthy advice makes them a friend you can’t live without.

5 The One Looking for a Lucky Break

We all have a friend that tries and tries but lady luck is just not on his or her side. Be it waiting for a job call back, waiting for their big break, an overdue promotion, this friend is struggling. No one likes to see them struggle or continually be knocked back but their circumstances can make you appreciate what you have. The opportunity to help them out is always there and it’s all the better if they can rely on you for that help. Once they get their lucky break they’ll not forget the help you gave them.

6 The Successful Friend

It’s natural to be jealous of this friend from time to time. Usually this jealously is something trivial and fleeting. They have the dream job, amazing successful friends and plenty of money for whatever their heart desires. They’re able to make time for your friendship and they’re always there when you call. They’re continually expanding your ability to network effectively. They know the best of the best in their chosen field and won’t hesitate to call in a favour or two for you.  They work crazy long, tough hours and value your friendship. Who knows what kind of interesting people this friend could introduce you to or what could happen when you spend time with them. Their success may even rub off on you!

TV’S Most Anticipated Returns: Winter 2013

Now that summer has drawn to a close and you begin to ready your hats, gloves and winter boots, it’s time to welcome back some of your favourite television dramas!  Love them or hate them, they’re all making dramatic returns to our screens this autumn/winter.

If you haven’t finished watching the previous season of Revenge, Dallas, Downton Abbey, Nashville or The Good Wife, look away now!

Downton Abbey Season 4

Downton Season 4 Return

The highly anticipated return of Downton Abbey is almost upon us and I couldn’t be more excited! Season 4 begins six months after Matthew’s shocking death. Lady Mary is left alone to raise her son and heir to the Downton estate, George. I have to confess that I’m glad Downton got in there with the name George BEFORE Kate and William!
Viewers will also watch Tom Branson struggles as a single father with baby Sybil. Tom and Mary’s grief will bring them closer than ever but contrary to numerous online rumours they won’t strike up a relationship. That doesn’t mean there won’t be any romances this season!

Tom Branson Baby Sybil Lady Mary Baby George

From the trailer released at the end of August , Tom appears to find love again, this time with Baby Sybil’s nanny. Mary finds herself over run with potential matches including Lord Anthony Gillingham, played by gorgeous Welsh actor, Tom Cullen.  As if Lord Gillingham wasn’t enough, Mary will also be pursued by Charles Blake, played by Julian Ovenden and Evelyn Napier returns again portrayed by Brendan Patricks. Who knows, maybe Mary will be lucky in love once more.

L-R: Tom Cullen, Top Row;Brendan Patricks, Julian Ovenden, Bottom Row; Gary Car, Nigel Harmen

Season 4 sees the introduction of Downton’s first African American character. Gary Carr will play American jazz singer Jack Ross. Lady Rose MacClare (Lily James), returns again this season and causes quite a stir when she cosies up with Jack. Many of you may recognise Nigel Harman (Dirty Den’s son from Eastenders anyone?).  Harman, who is featured in the promo video, will play a new valet downstairs.  Both upstairs and downstairs will experience love, scandal and maybe even death this year!
Executive producer Rebecca Eaton has hinted that more shocking deaths, similar to Matthew’s and Lady Sybills are to come this season “Big things happen to a lot of people…Life goes on and then big things start happening … People didn’t see Matthew’s death coming and I don’t think they saw Sybil’s coming either. And there are a few [more] things that they’re not going to see coming.”
Watch this space Downton lovers! Season 4 airs in the UK on ITV September 22nd and January 5th 2014 in the USA.

Revenge Season 3

“Start your rev-engines”- It’s back! If the Revenge season 3 promo video is anything to go by, we’re in for another scandalous year in the Hamptons with Emily Thorne and Co. The beginning of the ABC trailer flashes forward five months to Emily’s wedding day.  While it’s unclear who Emily is marrying, many are presuming it may be Daniel after their re-engagement last season. However the most shocking part about this season’s opening episode… Emily gets shot!
Will Emily be the only one to suffer a horrible fate this season? By the looks of things the devious Conrad Grayson will be taken down aswell. We’ll have to wait and see what terrible fate awaits Condrad for season 3. Perhaps all his scheming and backstabbing is coming back to haunt him.Revenge s3
Now that Jack finally knows Emily’s real identity their relationship is likely to heat up and become even more complicated. After losing his brother Declan in the season 2 finale we can only guess that his emotions are up in the air. Emily’s right hand man Nolan Ross is still incarcerated after Padma pinned the blame for NYC black out and Carion programme onto him. Poor thing! And poor Charlotte, as if coping with losing Declan and being pregnant wasn’t bad enough her older half-brother Patrick (Justin Hartley, pictured above in this behind the scenes pic) returns. Charlotte is not happy!  Could an Emily/Charlotte take down be in the pipeline?

Revenge cast

Thankfully for female fans, Barry Sloane is returning to reprise his role as lovable spy Aiden. Online rumours have been flying that he may even get cosy with Victoria after tweeting that he will be “sleeping with the enemy”.  While one favourite will return, another is set to depart. It has been confirmed that Ashley Davenport will not return for all of season 3. Actress Ashley Madekwe confirmed that she will return to conclude Ashley Davenport’s storyline but there will “no longer a story left” to tell as the season progresses. I’m going to miss Ashley’s gorgeous outfits and hairdos!
As the summer is winding down for the rest of us mere mortals, summer is just beginning in the Hamptons.  Catch Revenge on September 29th in the USA. UK date unconfirmed.

Dallas Season 3

Dallas Promo S3

Dust off your cowboy hats and boots folks,  Dallas is coming back for a third season and it’s sure to be a good’un! The season 2 finale answered the most famous question on television; Who shot JR? Turns out it was JR’s private investigator Bum. JR who was crippled with cancer, decided it was best that Bum end his life, not the disease. In typical Ewing fashion, JR and Bum managed to frame Cliff Barnes for the supposed murder whilst landing him in a Mexican prison.  Cliff threatened that when his daughter Pamela/Rebecca finds out he was framed there will be a “third generation blood feud”. How exciting!
As for newly married John Ross… well a leopard doesn’t change its spots. Season 2 ended with John Ross getting into bed with Emma, Anne’s long-lost daughter, not his new wife Pamela/Rebecca.  With Ryland behind bars thanks to Emma sneakily giving the authorities her father’s drug trafficking records, what will season 3 have in store for the residents of Southfork?

Dallas Tv Show

Plot details have been kept under wraps but Emma Bell who plays Emma Ryland has dropped a few hints as to what might happen in the upcoming season. She told, that we might see Emma and Anne Ewing becoming closer. However, it won’t be plain sailing, “I think we’re going to have some fights. I think there’s going to be some pulling… it’s going to be an exhale, inhale type thing. Once there is a mother/daughter bond, you can’t break it,” she says. One other thing is for sure when it comes to Dallas Season 3: Julie Gonzalo’s Pamela/Rebecca is not going to be happy if and when she learns what Emma and John Ross have been up to. “I think Emma’s going to have to buy some guns,” Bell jokes.
The third season is due to air early 2014 in the USA, most likely a month or two later on Channel 5 in the UK.

The Good Wife Season 5

Now that Alicia is leaving Lockhart/Gardner to set up her own firm with Carey Agos, things are going to get ugly. As she and Cary plan to leave behind Diane and Will’s back, Julianna Margulies has described it as “bloodbath”. Co-creator Robert King has stated that there will be a “civil war.” The first episode of season 5 will show Alicia announcing to Peter and Eli that she is starting her own firm.

The goodwife S 5

As for the newly elected governor Peter, could he be tempted once again by a new beautiful blonde working in his office?   Alicia and Peter have vowed to give their relationship another chance but this could spell trouble for the couple.
The Good Wife will air on September 29th in the USA. The UK date remains unconfirmed for 2014.

Nashville Season 2

After a show stopping first season, everyone’s favourite country music show is back.  After Rayna and Deacon’s terrible car crash could this be the end of country music’s brightest star?
Episode one will show Rayna fighting for her life as Deacon drags her from the wreckage of their smashed jeep. After announcing to Deacon that he was Maddie’s real father, will he and Rayna finally get the happy ending that fans are dying to see?  Will Deacon turn to alcohol once again or could  this  be the wake up call he needs to get his life and alcohol addiction back under control? From one father to another, Teddy’s bit on the side Peggy left us with the bombshell that she is pregnant with his child, adding a complete spanner to the works.
In the final minutes of the season 1 finale, Gunnar proposed to Scarlett.  It was looking like Scarlett and her ex, Avery may have been back on track for reconciliation. Can it still happen? If the promo is anything to go by then, yes!  We see a pretty, unidentified brunette kissing Gunnar which may just be the ammo Avery needs to win back Scarlett.

Juliette beings to deal with the loss of her mother, this time for good. In typical Juliette fashion it isn’t long getting before she gets back to business. She even throws a tantrum whining, “Now I have to compete with a saint in a coma”, as Rayna fights for her life. Things could be looking up for Juliette’s love life as a new love interest is set to be introduced in the form of Vampire Diaries” and “Twilight” star, Charlie Bewley. Bewley is set to play a “confident, charming and self-deprecating businessman”.
Nashville returns to American audiences on September 25th, with an unconfirmed UK date set for 2014.

Wait a Minute… or Two

Did you know, on average a person will spend 40-60 minutes a day waiting?

Whether you’re waiting for a bus, for your turn at the doctors or waiting for a mate like this guy, , there is nothing  worse than trying to kill time! After a recent two and a half hour wait, I decided to compile a list of boredom killers and essentials to carry in your handbag, that might help ease the wait.

1.Mobile Phone

The obvious option to pass the time is to whip out your mobile phone. The majority of smartphones are filled with fun time-busting apps. Pinterest, 4Pics 1 Word, True or False, Angry Birds, Candy Crush, Vine, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube etc. are sure to keep you entertained.

2. MP3/iPod

The next best option to your smartphone device is an MP3 or iPod.  A good FM radio station or your favourite playlists and albums will see you through until you’re finished queuing or waiting.

FM Radio and iPods

3.Pen and Notepad

If you have no internet connection or your device is not fully charged make sure you have a pen and notebook on hand.  You can draw, jot down ideas, make lists of items you need or products you’re thinking of buying. I always find that when I am on my own for an extended period of time, it can jog my memory and enhance my imagination.

Pen and Notebook

Waiting can leave you hungry. Always carry around an energy bar or chocolate bar in your bag or pocket. Be careful though, chocolate will melt in your pocket! A bottle of water is also a handy essential.

5. A Book

Be it on a kindle, a magazine, a newspaper or an actual book, reading is a great time consumer. If you’re stuck for something to read I would highly recommend browsing through . You can browse synopses of almost every book available and read non-spoiler reviews. Alternatively you can have a look at some of my reads on the widget to your right or…. Browse your favourite book blogs on

Books Magazine Kindle Newspapers

If you have no book, no water, no food, money can always get you out of a fix. You can run into your local newsagents, café or shop, grab a coffee, snack or magazine to tide you over.

Money euro pound yen dollar

7.Go For a Walk

If you are waiting while someone else carries out another task or waiting for their appointment to finish, why not go for a walk around the area.  Even if you know the area well a fifteen minute walk will get your blood flowing and burn a few calories. You never know who you could meet or what you could see along the way!

Group WalkingHappy waiting everyone.

The #Selfie Obsession

Gone are the days of disposable cameras and film rolls! No more waiting for a week to see how your pictures turned out. Sadly, the excitement of one hour photo development has disappeared. Nowadays we rely on digital cameras and smartphones to view our pictures. The majority of the world’s population have a smartphone of some make or form. According to,1.08 billion people own a smartphone.91.4 million of these users are from the US.

iPhone and Android’s introduction of the front facing camera have encourage a new generation of selfie-aholics.  As always, celebrities have helped encourage the selfie trend. Kim Kardashian is possibly the biggest selfie culprit on Twitter.

Numerous apps have been developed for smartphones to enable instant sharing of our snaps online. Instagram, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest make it easier than ever to upload and share pictures online.Pic Sharing Apps

Rihanna utilises Instagram daily under the name, BadGalRiRi. Her risque selfies never fail to make headlines.

Many blogs and websites offer a guide for us mere mortals, to taking the best possible selfies. The best Dos and Don’ts can be found at the links below.

There are even Facebook and Twitter pages dedicated to sharing the best and worst selfies. However, the majority of the “best” selfies always seem to be aimed at over 18 audiences…Regardless, the trend is taking the internet by storm. Sharing self-portraits dates back to a pre-internet era. It’s believed the first self-portrait taken on a camera was by Robert Cornelius 1839. Although it doesn’t quite meet the modern selfie standards of today, he did set the bench mark pretty high with his nonchalant pose!

Robert Cornelius 1839 Selfie

During the 1880’s cameras came with self-timers, while Polaroid sold the first instant camera during the 1970’s. Polaroid cameras could be held at arm’s length, much like a smartphone, to take selfies.

On a personal note I think that the phrase selfie has taken on a life of its own. A front facing picture with someone else isn’t necessarily a selfie in my books.

One thing is for sure, selfies are not going away anytime soon!

What do you think of the #selfie trend?

It’s Time For: Wimbledon

Rackets at the ready please!

Summer is officially in full swing now that Wimbledon has hit our television screens.  (Yes, I know, terrible tennis puns are unnecessary.) Coverage from the prestigious All English Lawn Tennis  Club for the next two weeks will focus on world class players, the underdogs, shock early exits, which this week included Rafael Nadal, celebrity spectators and of course,  strawberries and cream.

Last year after my final exams, myself and two of my friends headed over to London for a mini holiday. On the third day of our trip we decided to hop on the tube and head out to Wimbledon. The tennis club is about a fifteen/twenty minute walk from the tube station so be prepared. Along the way there were Evian reps giving out free water and companies distributing free strawberries and cream sweets, which were delicious! For those of you who planning to go to Wimbledon on a whim, here is what to expect.

Queues, Queues and More Queues

If you don’t have tickets, try to get there as early as possible. When we arrived at the “No Ticket” gate around 10 am we were greeted by a not so friendly young blonde attendant. She informed us that it was “cash ONLY” from here on in. The nearest ATM was a good walk away so make sure to have cash with you. None the less, there is a great queuing system in place. The attendants even handed us a “Guide to Queuing”!  The queue begins at the edge of a field and curves right the way round. Eventually, after you walk up and down the field numerous times you reach another entrance.  Naively we thought that this was the entrance to the grounds.  This point sees the beginning of a long walk up to the grounds.  Along the way there are more freebies including sweets, juice and water. We were also reminded numerous times that it was indeed, cash only. After two hours of queuing we reached the security checks.

Note: The free blister patches we were given further back were not allowed in. After a quick climb up the stairs we were finally there. It was worth the wait!

Tickets and Where To Go

Once you begin to see the roof of centre court and the exclusive roof dining areas the boring queuing atmosphere dissolves and the buzz of Wimbledon replaces it. The ticket office wizz you right through.  Once leaving the ticket area you are free to roam the glorious grounds, including gift shops where you can buy, towels, programmes, hats, even used balls. Naturally we headed straight for strawberries and cream stand, which were surprisingly cheap at £2.50 each. Strawberries at Wimbledon

Henman Hill has a great atmosphere if you’re interested in watching the games on centre court. There are multiple courts that you can view games without tickets but if you want a seat you need to be there early.

What to Bring With You

As we were completely unprepared for our outing I’ve compiled a list of a few essentials that I wish I had brought with me.

  • An Umbrella, a Light Coat, Sun cream and Sunglasses. The weather is always unpredictable so I would highly advise preparing for all eventualities. When we were queuing to get into the grounds it was cloudy and quite cold. Once we reached the courts the sun was splitting the rocks. Later on in the day it began to drizzle. Typical English summertime weather!
  • A blanket, drinks and food. If you haven’t got a ticket it’s most likely you will be on the Hill watching the action. We regretted not having brought a picnic with us and a blanket of sorts to sit on. The grass can be quite damp up there. While there are benches they’re usually full. There is no more free water once you get inside. You can buy food inside but if you have a good spot, you won’t want to leave it. Food also comes in handy when you’re queuing. There are burger and concession stands but at 11 in the morning we didn’t feel like burgers.

Despite not having the majority of what I’ve mentioned above, Wimbledon was a fantastic day out. There is so much to see and so many strawberries to eat! If you are making a trip to Wimbledon I would advise that you don’t go on a day that a British player is on court. The man ahead of us in the queue last year told us that the queues are twice as long and they often close the grounds when they’re full.

Make sure to look out for the ball boys and girls around the grounds. They walk around like little ducks in a row. If you’ve had the chance to experience Wimbledon, make sure and leave a comment below. I’d love to hear from you.

That IS Kray!

If you’ve been browsing on the twittershere or listening to the radio over the past few months the word, “Kray” will not be new to you. The popular urban slang useage of the word, “Kray Kray”, has been circulating the web for months. Its popularity can be attributed to Jay Z and Kanye West. The rap moguls’ collaboration on the hit song “In Paris” saw the introduction of the phrase word “Kray”. Variations of the phrase have popped up online…even in meme form including President Obama, Tommy Pickles and Regina George!

Jay Z and Kanye West, Kray!

Twenty first century slang has seen the word become a substitute for the word “crazy”. In actuality the phrase refers to brothers, Ronald “Ronnie” and Reginald “Reggie” Kray. The English twin brothers were notorious gangsters and crime lords in London’s East End during the 50’s and 60’s. Think Grant and Phil Mitchell only much worse.

Kray Twins Ronnie and Reggie

The phrase “Kray” relates to all the outrageous deeds the two brothers committed during their time as London’s biggest crime lords.  Their success in amateur boxing was short lived. The siblings turned their hands to organised crime included the likes of armed robberies, arson, assault, high jacking and murder. It is widely reported that Ronnie suffered from Schizophrenia.

During the 60’s the brothers opened various nightclubs in London raising their social status. Celebrities like Judy Garland and Barbara Windsor were photographed with the brothers as well as famous politicians and MP’s.  It’s safe to say that the Kray’s would have been delighted with the newfound fame of their family name 50 years on.

The twins ran a body guard service which gained them numerous high profile clients from the business and showbiz world, including Frank Sinatra. Witnesses to their dirty deeds were petrified to testify against the brothers as they reigned over London with their gang “The Firm”. However, things quickly turned south for the Kray brothers when they were imprisoned for life for the murder of two rival gangsters, George Cornell and Jack “The Hat” McVitie.

Eventually, witnesses and gang members gave evidence against the twins in court. The celebrity status and attention surrounding the twins lead to a refusal of parole. It has been argued by the brothers themselves that if it had not been for the Kray name, they would have severed a shorter sentence.

What became of London’s biggest mobsters?

Ronnie died in March 1975 from a heart attack aged 61 in a mental hospital while Reggie who was battling cancer, died in his sleep in October 2000 in his home after being released from prison on compassionate grounds.

So, when people say “That’s so kray…You’re kray”, be sure to remember the “Kra-z-y” antics of the Kray siblings!

The New Generation of Superheroes

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Henry Cavill steaming up the front page of every magazine on the news shelves! Not that you’re going to find any females complaining. The recent wave of new faces taking on the world’s best loved superheroes comes in the form of thirty year old Henry Cavill. Cavill is the latest in a long line of stars to take on the role of Superman in Man of Steel.

Henry Cavill New Superman Magazine covers

The Man of Steel features Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Mc Adams isn’t the only new edition to Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Superman, there’s a new super suit. Cavill’s suit is much darker and manly than previous Suits worn by the likes of Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Brandon Routh and Tom Welling.

Superman over the years

Cavill isn’t the first, or indeed the last, to take on the role of a well-established character. In 2012, Andrew Garfield suited up as Spiderman in The Amazing Spiderman. Garfield took over the role from Tobey Maguire who debuted as Spiderman in 2002. While Garfield’s version of everyone’s favourite spider was no runaway success like Maguire’s, he has managed to land the role again for the upcoming The Amazing Spiderman 2.

Gotham City has been blessed with numerous Batmen over the years, including George Clooney! Now that Christopher Bale’s stint on The Dark Knight Trilogy has ended will there be a new Batman in town?

Everyone’s favourite crazy-tempered-green-monster, The Hulk, has seen Eric Banna and Mark Ruffalo run around in iconic purple shorts.

Chris Pine and Ryan Reynolds have been fortunate enough to be the first to portray Captain America and The Green Lantern.

The success of both has been challenged but they are paving the way for new adaptations of classic favourites.

Pride and Prejudice 2: The Sequel?

If, like me, you’re a massive Pride and Prejudice fan then I have news for you! The BBC has announced that they are shooting a three part mini-series detailing the life of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy six years after their marriage.

The series entitled Death Comes to Pemberely will be based on P.D James’ bestselling novel of the same name. The story will revolve around a murder at Pemberely estate. Jane Austen’s best loved characters are to be plunged into a world of mayhem and mystery as the murder investigation begins…

It has been announced this week that Welsh actor Matthew Rhys is set to sink his teeth into the role of Mr Darcy.

British actress Anna Maxwell Martin has been cast to portray Elizabeth. Martin has stared in numerous TV series’ and the 2007 film Becoming Jane which depicted a pre-fame Jane Austen!

Matthew Goode, who stared along side Amy Mc Adams in the film Leap Year, is to play George Wickham.

Rhys told The Telegraph, “Exciting as it is, one of the challenges of a part such as Darcy are the comparisons that will be drawn to those who’ve institutionalised him in the past. The beauty of ‘Pemberley’ is that it is an entirely new and different Darcy 6 years on.”

Filming is due to start this June in Yorkshire. The series is due to air around Christmas time 2013 in Ireland and the UK.

After reading some online reviews, it appears that the books ending was a bit of a let-down No doubt the three-part series will heighten the drama and the tension. I’m looking forward to see how this series pans out. Honestly, I think it will be hard to beat the 2005 Keira Knightley and Matthew McFadden portrayal of literature’s two most loved characters.

As always, I’d love to know your thoughts and opinions!
